A Natural Baccarat Hand - Worth 9 Points

A Natural Baccarat Hand – Worth 9 Points

Baccarat is a casino card table game that has turned into one of the most played and talked about games in the gambling world. This has mainly happened due to the nature of it as some of the worlds best known casino high rollers choose exactly this game for their gambling adventures. Recently one of the best poker players in the world, Phil Ivey, won over $10 million playing Baccarat in a casino located in London, United Kingdom. This winning session actually turned into quite a scandal, as the casino refused to pay him.

The game itself is a card comparing game, just like BlackJack, but Baccarat does not feature an element of skill playing any roll. Today there are 3 popular types of this game. Punto Banco is the most played one and exactly the type that is offered by most Online Casinos. Chemin De Fer and Baccarat Banque are historic types that used to be very popular in France, where the game has been invented. The two latter allow skill to play a part as they are played between several players. This game is actually considered to gain its popularity from the popular James Bond movie, Casino Royale. First version that was out in 1953 had Bond playing several times.

In Baccarat, you compete against the dealer by trying to achieve a higher hand value, similarly as in BlackJack. However, you do not necessarily have to bet on your hand to win – you can choose to bet on the dealers. The highest hand value in this game is 9, which is considered as a natural hand, if made by only 2 cards.

Hand Valuationbaccarathandvaluation

When playing Baccarat cards between 2 and 9 are worth their face value. Deuce will be worth 2 points, nine will be worth 9 points and so on. All face cards are worth 0 points and aces are worth 1 point.

The most interesting thing is the actual valuation of hands. It might be hard to understand how the highest hand value can possibly be 9, if a single card is worth that much.

Here is the trick – the hand value is calculated by taking the rightmost number of the total sum into account. If you hold a hand of two nines, your actual hand value is 8. This is due to the fact that 9+9=18 and the rightmost number is 8.

Do not worry about calculating hand value, though. The dealer will do it for you or if you play Baccarat online, the software will.

Drawing Rules

baccaratdrawingrulesI previously mentioned that there is no room for skill in Baccarat, well actually the most popular form of it, Punto Banco. This is because cards are dealt by following a pre-set number of rules that dictate whether the third card is dealt or not. You do not have to make a decision on anything other than wager size and bet type.

The only rule for the player is that he draws a third card whenever he has a hand value of between 0 and 5 and stands when the value is either 6 or 7.

While players rules are real simple, whether banker draws to the third card or not is decided by following a set of more complex rules.

If player has only two cards (he did not draw), banker follows the same rules as the player – draws between 0 and 5 and stands when 6 or 7. Though, if the player did draw a third card, the banker follows a more complicated set of rules that are outlined below.

Banker acts taking the third card that was drawn into account:

  • If it was a deuce or a three, the banker draws with a hand that features value of between 0 and 4, while standing with 5 to 7.

  • If it was a four or five, the banker draws with a hand that features value of between 0 to 5 while standing with 6 to 7.

  • If it was a six or seven, the banker draws with a hand that features value of between 0 and 6 while standing with 7.

  • If it was an eight, the banker draws with a hand that features value of between 0 and 2 while standing with 3 to 7.

  • If it was an ace, nice, ten or a face card, the banker draws with between 0 and 3 while standing with 4 to 7.

Bet Types & Payoutsbaccaratbettypes

Unlike most other card comparing games, Baccarat allows players to bet on several outcomes of the hand. You can either choose to bet that your hand will win (will have a higher point count), choose the bankers hand or alternatively predict that it will be a tie.

The payouts are awarded at even money odds for the banker and player bets – you will win an amount equal to your wager in case you win. However, the banker bet features a 5% comission that makes the true odds of 0.95 to 1 for this bet.

The Tie bet offers larger payout odds of 8 to 1 meaning you will win $80 for every $10 staked, given that the both the dealer and banker hold hands of equal point count.

Natural Hand

We can draw parallels to the game of BlackJack once again. Similarly as it is pretty much ”game over” when you get dealt a natural hand (you lock in a win), it is also the same in Baccarat. If either you or the banker gets dealt a hand worth 8 or 9 points with only 2 cards, no drawing rules are applied and the winner is instantly determined & paid.

There is no strategy or optimal way to play Baccarat simply because you do not make any decisions that have an impact of your actual hand value.

However, there are a couple of baccarat systems that you can use and apply when playing this game. Even thought they will not change the odds of the game (do not let anyone tell you else), they are fun to try and certainly worth it.

The most popular ones like Martingale, Labouchere, Paroli and d’Alembert can all be applied to just about any casino game, including this one.
