Caribbean Poker Table

Caribbean Poker is a casino card game that was invented by David Sklansky after the poker boom took place and casinos wanted to have a shot at earning more money than just the rake they got from club poker. The game is quite similar to five card stud, a club poker variation that was very popular at the time.

The game was firstly introduced with a name ”Casino Poker” that did not really take off as David was not able to patent it due to the circumstances. This variation featured some significant differences from the Caribbean game we know today. Dealer was showing two of his hole cards not one like it is in the Caribbean Poker. There also was no progressive jackpot, which is the main selling point of the game. Real version and the one we know today was brought to light after the owner of Aruba Casino approached David Sklansky.

Today this poker game is played across casinos worldwide as well as heavily advertised at online casino sites. The progressives are linked among several partners to create huge amounts of cash up for grabs, thus inclining players to play.

Rules & Game Play

Caribbean Holdem Poker is actually a really simple game to play and one that does not require all that much knowledge or thinking. This is, of course, a good thing as most people are going to the casino or gambling online because they want to have some rest and a break from the daily routine.

caribbeanstudpokerrulesYou start out by placing a wager that is known as the ”ante bet”. There are a couple of things that you have to take into account before placing it, though.

  1. If you will be willing to continue in the hand and have a shot at winning money, you will have to place 2x ante bet (known as making a ”call”). Account for this before the hand so you would have enough cash to make this bet.
  2. In order to win a progressive jackpot, you will be required to place a wager (usually $1) on the Jackpot field at the table.

After placing the ”ante bet” you will be dealt with a hand consisting of 5 cards. Dealer will also deal a hand to himself, but you will only be able to see 1 card from his hand. This is when you have to make a decision – either fold the hand and move on to the next one (you lose the ante bet) or call and see the dealers hand.

Winner is determined, when you have made a call and dealer opens up his cards. Hands are valued the same way as in five card stud. If you are unaware of the hand combinations – we have attached a chart showing hands listed by their strength.

There is one very important rule in the game. In order for your call bet to be awarded with a payout, dealers hand has to qualify. A qualifying hand is one that is equal to AK or better. If the dealers hand does not qualify, payout is awarded to your ante bet at 1 to 1 odds while the call bet is considered as a push.

caribbeanstudpokerpayoutchartWhile you will often be awarded with an even money payout, Caribbean Poker features an actual payout table that offers increased payouts as high as 100 to 1 for getting hands of specific strength. These payouts are awarded only in scenario that dealers hand does qualify.

caribbeanstudpokerprogressivebetNote that there still are casinos that do not offer a Jackpot prize associated with hitting a royal flush in Caribbean Poker. If you are in a casino that does not, I would advise against playing as this is actually the main reason why you should play it in the first place.

Jackpots for this game can be easily found at various online casino sites and it will take you a couple of minutes to get started playing a progressive version of this game, so certainly not worth missing on a potential 6 to even 7 figure payday.

Even though there is not much of a strategy behind playing Caribbean Stud, math wise the optimal way to play is call all the time when holding AK or better and fold any other hands. You might experience a lot of folding this way, but math is right in the end.

Alternatively, you can also try some of our Caribbean Poker Systems that mostly include the famous betting strategies like Martingale, Labouchere, Paroli and d’Alembert. Note that these will not help you at gaining an edge in this game, but they surely will provide you with some extra entertainment and fun.
