How To Play Craps: The basics

The shooter, who is always one of the players, bets at least the table minimum on the Pass Line or the Don’t Pass Line options. These will be explained later on. The stickman provides the shooter with about five dice, from which they can choose 2 to play with.  The stickman takes back the remaining dice.

These dice have to be handled with one hand only, even when throwing. The dice must always hit the walls at the opposite end of table. If the shooter unfortunately manages to throw them right off the table, the dice will be closely inspected by the stickman for any damage, before they are put back into the game.

As stated earlier you will find nearly 20 people at a craps table, all of which get their turn at shooting the dice. If you don’t want to participate in the throwing of the dice, you can simply choose to bet on a thrower of your liking. You will also see some casino staff at the table; these include the boxman, stickman, and also two dealers.

The craps game is played in rounds. The people around the table will take their turn clock wise, at throwing the dice.

What You Absolutely Need To Know: The Pass Line

There are many different types of bets to be made at a craps game, but this is the main bet. If you don’t know anything about craps, know that 9 out of 10 times, a player will choose to start off their game with a bet on the Pass Line.

The Pass Line is also a profitable bet because the house edge on this one is less than 2%.

To make the Pass Line bet, wait for a new round to start off. When it is announced by the dealer, you need to put your chips in the area marked as pass line. The shooter will pick up the dice, roll them and thus the first roll is called, the Come-Out Roll. Whether you win or lose this bet, it is dependent on the outcome of this roll. Here is what happens:

  • Rolling a 7 or 11 on the Come Out roll or rolling the point twice will constitute a Win.
  • Rolling a 2, 3, or 12 on the Come Out roll, or rolling a 7 before rolling the point twice means you Lost.
  • If a dice point is rolled on the craps table (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10) the dice rolled must then be repeated before a 7 is thrown, you win. If in the case 7 is rolled earlier than the (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10)  point, you lose.
